Aldworth Philharmonic OrchestraOctober 2018
Saturday 20th October, 7.30pm
The Great Hall, University of Reading, London Road Campus
Magnitude level: Mahler
Reading’s Aldworth Philharmonic Orchestra (APO), recent winners of ‘Performance of the Year’ at the Reading Cultural Awards, will present its biggest and most ambitious concert yet on Saturday 20th October, 7.30pm, at The Great Hall of the University of Reading (London Road Campus).
‘Just imagine a work of such magnitude that it mirrors the whole world - one is, so to speak, only an instrument, played on by the universe..My symphony will be something the like of which the world has never yet heard!...In it the whole of nature finds a voice.’
So said Gustav Mahler of his epic Third Symphony. With an orchestra of 100 players, plus around 40 singers (including a children’s choir from the University of Reading’s Universal Voices), it will indeed be a sound and sight to behold.
‘Mahler’s music is tremendously evocative’, explains APO Music Director, Andrew Taylor, ‘With nature as his inspiration it’s like listening to a film score, except the imagery is created inside the mind of each listener. It’s a wonderful experience to sit and absorb these wonderful soundscapes - full of drama, tenderness and emotion.’
In addition to the concert performance at 7.30pm, members of the orchestra will gather before the concert, at 6.30pm, for a free pre-concert talk about the music and the challenges of performing it.
We really love classical music, and believe that the sight and sound of a live orchestra and choir is something to behold. If you’ve never attended a live classical performance, you can see this one FREE through our Concert Virgin scheme.
Tickets are £15 for adults (£13 concessions, £8 children). Buy your tickets from www.aldworthphilharmonic.org.uk/next-concert, where Concert Virgins can also register for their FREE tickets.
