SLEEPER: **** (4)

“It’s never going to be this good, so just climb in!”

Prophetically, Sleeper were right – it’s never been as good as the summer of ’97.  And after lying dormant for nearly a quarter of a century, Sleeper have woken up, and they haven’t changed a bit:  Louise Wener, the Sleeping Beauty of the band, still has her skunk blonde fringe separating duelling guitarists, who for all their ‘Sleeperbloke’ moniker and dark clothes, are the engine room of the sound.  The bald spots and silver foxes in the crowd, next to whom a thousand housewives fizzed and burned in the summer sun, were the only things to mark the passage of time.

The set list was roughly two thirds old, one third new.  The loud ‘Cellophane’ from the new album is the opener, before a nostalgia overflow of half of The It Girl is peppered with Delicious, Vegas, and then Atomic (they got the rights!) spiced with a surprise.  The unexpected sleeper-hit of the show was Factor 41, an album track that hadn’t made the Greatest Hits compilation, but worked better live than it had any right to.

21st Century Sleeper have still got it - particularly with Look At You Now (containing a lyrically portentous ‘You’re playing all the hits / but they won’t get you anywhere’) that echoes their Pixies influence, whilst showing they can still appeal to their base as they develop a new sound.  

The hour flew by and the crowd were wanting an encore that they didn’t get – Wener remarked several times how good it was to be back up there, doing it again.  The set was tight, but slightly the poorer for the absence of any of the underrated post It Girl songs – She’s A Good Girl, Romeo Me, Disco Duncan or This Is The Sound of Someone Else might have added an extra flavour to the show and delighted the earnest fans at the front.

The sun rises again on Louise Wener & co.  But how long are they here for?
