The Varukers plus The Poly-Esters & more TBC on Friday 18th August 2017
Yet another 100 proof cult punk act comes to The Conti!
The Varukers are a classic UK hardcore punk band formed in 1979 by vocalist Anthony 'Rat' Martin.
For those unfamiliar, the band plays in the D-beat style, as pioneered by Continental veterans Discharge – with whom they share an anarchist political ideology. Starting out in the early 1980s, they were part of the harder-edged, metal-tinged UK 82 movement that included the likes of Discharge, Chaos UK, Amebix, and GBH.
While they split in 1989, vocalist Rat and guitarist Biff put the band back together in 1991. Stylistically their 1990s-era music resembled the traditional UK82 style. Since the band had former members of Discharge, a D-beat sound developed as time went on. The band has gone through many line-up changes over the years with the only constant member being Rat on vocals while guitarist Biff has been with the band since 1985.
Even with Rat splitting his time between the Varukers and Discharge and Biff splitting his time with Sick on the Bus. The Varukers continue to tour constantly. They shared a headlining spot with such acts as Broken Bones, The Adicts, Vice Squad and GBH at the ill-fated British Invasion 2k6 concert festival in San Bernardino, California, which ended in rioting.
New LP ‘Damned & Defiant’ is released this year!
PLUS SPECIAL GUESTS THE POLY-ESTERS
This Blackpool based four piece are aN abrasive take on British Riot Grrrl with a furious mix of heavy riffs, gritty vocals and grungey roots.
The vocals are a frenetic shared affair semi-fronted by mouthpiece Syphi-Lizz (bass) giving pure, rough arsed abuse, offset by the siren sounds of the sultry Catlow (guitar) and the lovely Lola-Fenix (guitar) delivering raw burn and driving it through to the bitter end. All of this is brought together with some solid beef on drums from little minx, Elliska.
