New WORLD MUSIC strand at The Continental kicks off Feb 16th with PAPASAM ALAFIA.
Sam Maitland, aka PapaSam Alafia, moved to the UK in the late 1980s from Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa.
He's recorded and performed with many African and international artists. He has played music extensively throughout the UK, from Manchester's Band on the Walland Bridgewater Hall to London's Jazz Café, the African Centre at Covent Garden, Smolensky’s at the Strand, and the ‘Sounds of Africa’ concert on Clapham Common. At the Bristol Carnival he was filmed with his band Alafia for MTV African Music Show.
In 2011, he began to play the palm wine music of his native country and is being well received for this genre around the UK. In 2012, he was booked at several Manchester venues as part of the internationally acclaimed We Face Forward Festival, both running workshops and performing.
He has worked with a wide variety of artists, including Seal, King Masco, and the African band Rokoto, with whom he toured the United States and Japan.
