The Equals 50th Anniversary Tour on Saturday 20th October 2018
In 1965 The Equals (featuring Eddy Grant and Pat Lloyd) began gigging around London to amazing audiences by becoming the first mixed race band in Britain with their limitless energy and distinct style fusing pop, blues and R & B.
In 1967 they released their single ‘Hold Me Closer’ with the ‘B’ Side track, ‘Baby, Come Back’. It didn’t do well in the UK, but in 1967 it went to the number one position in Germany, The Netherlands and in Europe. Following its success in Germany, ‘Baby Come Back’ was re-released in the UK in 1968 where in no time at all it soared high into the UK charts reaching top position at No. 1 for six glorious weeks.
The group received a gold disc for a combined one million sales of the record in June 1968.
1969 saw ‘Viva Bobby Joe’ as another hit for the band.
In 1970 came their hit ‘Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys’ which spent eleven weeks in the charts in 1970 and 1971 reaching No. 9 during 1970. While the band was on tour in Germany, they were involved in a car crash. Eddy Grant in particular was badly injured and had to stay in hospital in Germany. Returning to England Eddy suffered a heart attack and a collapsed lung and was hospitalised again. On recovering he decided to leave The Equals as a touring band but continued to write and record with the band.
The Equals continued without Eddy and gradually incorporated more funk and reggae into their sound, culminating in their 1976 album ‘Bon Ya’ which Eddy Grant returned to write and produce which featured the club friendly ‘Funky Like a Train’.
Following appearances on the BBC’s ‘Top of The Pops’ performing ‘Funky Like a Train’. The Equals released their 1978 album ‘Mystic Syster’ which featured another club hit ‘Nobody’s Got Time’.
The Equals to this day continue to perform to Worldwide audiences however, The Equals have not performed in the UK for 30 years but are now touring the UK celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Baby Come Back’.
