Thatching Open Day on Friday 27th July 2018
The Appeal work for St. Margaret’s at Hales, and St. Gregory’s at Heckingham continues with help from The Churches Conservation Trust.
Two of our churches, at Hales and Heckingham, have suffered at the hands (wings?) of birds, who have removed thatch for the purpose of building their nests, and so far, the money raised stands at about £9,000 – about 35% of our total. The CCT is busy applying for grants; and we have been very fortunate to receive support from local neighbours and landowners, previous visitors to the church, local groups, people who have family connections with the church, as well as well-wishers who just want to contribute to the appeal.
July 27th is Norfolk Day, and to draw attention to this and our appeal, an exhibition will be held at St. John’s Church, Maddermarket in Norwich – to show people how thatching works, how the skill is continued in this part of the country, and hopefully raising some funds to repair the damage to the roofs at both Hales and Heckingham – just 13 miles from your villages to the centre of Norwich.
Talks on the hour every hour, starting at 11.00 a.m., and finishing at 15.00; talks with the thatcher direct and you can find out more about that wonderful skill, fun and games for young families, and refreshments in the church. Come to St. John Maddermarket in Pottergate on Norfolk Day and discover more! There’s also lots more to see and do in Norwich on Norfolk Day – so make it a family trip and enjoy celebrating this glorious part of the world.
