Opera North's Pagliacci and Cavalleria rusticana on Saturday 11th November 2017
Opera North's festival of The Little Greats offers six short operas packed with huge emotions. In the curtain-raiser for the season, Pagliacci, Leoncavallo carves a 'bleeding slice of life' out of the tale of a touring theatre troupe preparing for a show. As real life passions spin out of control, the stage becomes the scene of a violent reckoning made all the more poignant by heartbroken Canio's (Peter Auty) 'the show must go on' aria 'Vesti la giubba'. Directed by Charles Edwards, who is also the set and lighting designer for all six of The Little Greats.
A red-blooded story of jealousy and revenge follows as we enter the world of Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana. A solider (Jonathan Stoughton) returns to his village only to discover that his lover Lola (Katie Bray) has married another man. He consoles himself by seducing another girl Santuzza (Giselle Allen) - with tragic consequences. Polish director Karolina Sofulak gives an unusual twist to this passionate work which, for many, is the essence of Italian opera in miniature.
Tobias Ringborg conducts the Orchestra of Opera North.
