Roots Supper Club on Saturday 24th November 2018
Enjoy four seasonal courses and a signature cocktail by Ugly Duckling with live roots music from The Berry Tree Band. Through delicious colourful plates, explore different methods of sustainable food practice, as we invite you to experience and consider local food culture. From preserving and pickling to wild sorbets, promising to nourish your bodies and make you smile. Three part vocal harmonies, guitar, accordion and 5-string violin all interwoven to give bursts of auditory delight between courses.
The Ugly Duckling strives to save, pick, grow and source locally, changing perfectly imperfect produce into beautiful things. Through the art of rescuing, reusing and growing ingredients they want to encourage an affordable and sustainable food culture in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
The Berry Tree Band brings together three virtuoso players for a set rooted in Folk/Americana, coloured strongly by their diverse musical backgrounds.
By day, Annie Ball is a concert pianist; here she switches her Steinway for accordion, singing with a clear and passionate tone which recalls the lower registers of Joni Mitchell. Composer Helen Bell joins on five-string violin: the instrumental pieces are all her own compositions, while violin and accordion interlock to carry the traditional songs. Longtime lover of Celtic guitar, Ben Young underpins the songs and tunes with Bert-Jansch-styled fingerpicking.
Upbeat, and always driven by three-part harmonies infused with the players' love of group song, the set contains some breathtakingly bitter fruits thrown in with the many sweet ones.
