Review of Hacienda NYE
The music in the opening few hours of the night was diabolical. Choices went from remixes of SEAL to remixes of THE STONE ROSES to god knows what. Beats that were in totally different BPM's were force fed in to each other in a mix that a back bedroom DJ would have given his neig*bours nightmares over. The bass was overwhelming whilst the treble was non existent, one of the worst sound systems I've ever heard. The visuals were poor (free loops from the internet) that were looped endlessly (one DJ did 90 minutes to the same loop). The display itself was already looking sad with broken pixels and jaded LED panels. The drinks were exhortation, £6.50 for a brandy/c**e and £2.10 for a quarter pint of draft lemonade. The venue was spliced together from chipboard panels with unisex toilets that had 15 minute queues. Only the bar, the outdoor area and the shell of the building itself had any kudos but because of a very small dance area (suitable for 300 people) the venue is divided into a club that has a dance floor that is a jammed packed, sweaty, mosh pit and a lounge/bar that is cavernous and under filled. Much to work on to improve this venue, but start with the basics - a better sound system and better warm up DJ's who enhance (not detract) from the kudos of the Hacienda brand.
