Home on the Range is more than a disco club night; it is synonymous with the Carlton Club, the jewel in the crown of the fabulous Whalley Range community. It is probably not an exaggeration to say that HotR helped save the club from the fate befallen many social clubs across the country. That of slow decline, shrinking membership, bankruptcy and then carpet baggers swindling the community of a valuable asset. That very nearly happened 20 years ago but thanks to a few hardy individuals the asset stripers were seen off. Then 19 years ago a group of friends decided to try their hand of running a club night. Armed with a pair of decks and some cracking records Home on the Range was launched on the last Friday of November. A few friends and family of the team braved the chilly night and they had a party. Roll on a few months and word was spreading – the Carlton Club was a gem and HotR was a fine night out. Month on month it was the club’s busiest night and helped pay the bills. But more than that it helped redefine what a social club in 21st century could look like. Now HotR is perhaps just another event in a busy schedule of events at the club but to the HotR team it is home. Playing disco, house music and everything in between the original resident DJ’s curate what could be the friendliest dance floor in Manchester. If you’ve never been, where have you been?
