Chorlton Players - Comic Potential on Thursday 17th - Saturday 19th October 2019

Comic Potential is a comedy by Alan Ayckbourn set in the not-so-distant future, where everything is not really that different. Oh, except that actors have been replaced by robots. Who needs those pesky actors anyway!?

In a TV studio, the drunken and obnoxious director, Chandler, and his two tumultuous assistants, are making a sitcom. There’s no script, it’s all done by programming the Actoids, who just insist on malfunctioning. But Adam has other ideas. He’s young, foolish and still believes that good old-fashioned writing will win the audience over, as well as his barely seen uncle, who just so happens to be the eccentric and very rich owner of the station. Fighting off the ever-offensive Mrs Pepperbloom, who thinks he’s hers for the taking, Adam inadvertently falls for an Actoid, JC333, who seems so human that Adam writes her an actual script and then, ‘sound the sirens’ runs away with her because he is in love!

Lines are blurred, hearts become confused. Will love win out? Can an Actoid ever do any more than repeat the things she hears and sees? Or does this make her as human as the rest of us who have no free-thought anyway? Come and see this hilarious comedy to find out all the answers. Or at least those written in the script. Or should that be programme, or script, or do I mean, y334hddd… malfunction malfunction malfunction! Call in the programmers…
