Suffrage in the City on Saturday 15th September 2018
The Co‑operative Heritage Trust and the Co‑operative College are partnering up to bring this unique event to the people of Manchester and beyond. We’re coming together to celebrate the hundredth year of women being made eligible to vote and showcasing how the co‑operative movement has always supported the development of rights and opportunities here in the UK and across the world.
There’s lots going on over the course of the afternoon, with The Mikron Theatre Company joining us to give a free performance of their live show ‘Revolting Women’. This inspiring piece of live theatre tells the suffrage story through the eyes of a less well‑known Pankhurst, Sylvia, who fought for the vote alongside working women in the East End after leaving the Manchester based WSPU (Women’s Social and Political Union).
After the show you’ll be able to visit Plant, a unique workshop and gallery space. There’ll be a whole host of unique items on display from the National Co‑operative Archive that you’ll be able to explroe all relating to women’s organisations and their part in the story.
You’ll also be able to find out more about the work of the Co-operative College and see how their projects have helped transform the lives of women here in the UK and in countries around the world including Malawi, Rwanda and Sri Lanka.
