Peterloo Edition - 10 Artists to do battle on the battlefield....
On exactly the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre, we’ll be gathering a big crowd on the edge of the original battlefield site to celebrate the power of protest with a colourful party.
If painting a masterpiece in only 30 minutes in front of 600 people wasn't daunting enough, this time at Art Battle Manchester, ten artists will go head to head surrounded by some of the greatest art masters, as the nomadic event announces its next spectacular venue - the historic Manchester Art Gallery. One of Manchester's most iconic buildings; the gallery has been at the centre of city life since 1823.
Since it started in 2013, Art Battle Manchester has delivered 15 sold-out events across the city, never using the same venue twice. They clearly have a penchant for bringing the off-beat lively event to stunning buildings, as recent venues include London Road Fire Station, Albert Hall, The Royal Exchange, Victoria Baths and an array of historic mills and warehouses.
The Peterloo Edition will feature ten new fearless artists taking centre stage. A capacity crowd will watch painters, illustrators, tattooists and street artists go head-to-head in what has been described as the city's most energetic art event. With only 30 minutes to create a masterpiece - YOU will decide who is crowned Champion.
In addition to art and music, expect some unexpected shenanigans.....
The event will be part of the Peterloo 2019 Festival marking 200 years since the Peterloo Massacre. Manchester Histories are leading Peterloo 2019, a programme of activity that will mark the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre with public events, learning opportunities and creative exploration. You can check out the full programme here: https://peterloo1819.co.uk
Historians acknowledge that Peterloo was hugely influential: ordinary people eventually won the right to vote, the Chartist Movement grew into Trade Unions and the Manchester Guardian newspaper was established. Come and join us as we celebrate the power of the crowd and Manchester's ability to get things done.
Date: Friday 16th August 2019, 7-11pm.
