Join us for an exciting night of genre-bending original music performed on cello, voice and double bass.
Ben Cashell
Ben is an Irish cellist based in Manchester. His music walks the line somewhere between Tom Waits and the Foo Fighters, via Irish Trad. He has just released his debut EP Hot Air which has been featured on BBC Radio 3’s Night Tracks.
Phellotape
Phellotape is a brand new project for two Manchester musicians: jack-of-all-trades and bassist, Alice Phelps, and multi-instrumentalist and producer, Tom Twemlow. Weaving together wide-ranging influences including Feist, Andrew Bird, Björk, and Imogen Heap, Phellotape’s songs explore the complexities and absurdities of living in this age. Sometimes intricately-woven and delicate, sometimes heavy-hitting and raw - one thing is for certain, Phellotape will get stuck in your head.
Polly Virr and the Low Five Ensemble
Tonight will culminate in a low strung quintet of cellos and double basses - featuring original tunes written by multi-genre cellist Polly Virr. Polly released her debut EP Solace last year and has performed her solo project live at festivals and venues such as Manchester Jazz Fest, MIF, Just So Festival, Aldeburgh Festival, Matt & Fred’s and Band on the Wall. Expect cinematic soundscapes and rousing melodies supported by a deep, rich bed of strings. Polly's own music will be interspersed with some more recognisable tunes, but as you've never heard them before! (Ever heard Shaggy on the cello?!) All music arranged especially for tonight by Polly.
