Review of Ataraxia presents: Domenico Rosa
Venue is hard to find but well worth the search, toilets for girls is shared with a wanna be boyband up the stairs....
Ataraxia gets better and better each time I go. Though this was their first event, I have been to others of theirs since and can't wait for the next one!

Black Bee Soul Club
Had a superb night last night at Black bee soul club in the Northern quarter of Manchester city center.
The vibe was just as I had known it before, an upbeat and gritty mix of sounds for the duration of the time I spent there. It was a packed house where the majority of people were under 30.
Having been away from the place for a year I found I had lost track of the on trend sounds being played there. I must admit I didn't know many of the sounds played on the night and how pleasing it was to see that those regular bees still have their firm favorites in that occasionally you saw a swarm take place. Great to see that Fin has mastered a great spin too.
Saw many friends there from the soul scene still supporting the club along witht he younger elements which made for a great mix of like minded souls.
The adventurous play reflects how hard the club residents Michael & Anthony Davies along with Liam Beckett Sam McEwan are still working very hard at bringing new and exciting sounds to the table that make Black bee a "unique" soulful experience.
The guests tonight were Keiran Lockyear & Matt Sneath , both guests delivered thumping sounds that absorbed every ounce of dance energy.
I was talking to Sam McEwan who is the only original founder of the club about how the place has maintained it's buzz and I would have to agree that the Kraak Gallery venue enhances the atmosphere tenfold with its back street entrance off Stevenson Square and a knock three times feel to it , it feels very much like a secret society is gathering. The venue has had a mini refurbishment making the dance area bigger which was much welcomed by many dancers.
I would have to say that everyone in the room was there to dance I didn't see any beer swilling monsters which is the normal trade off that you sort of accept at these Free the soul and drop the baggage events.
Yes the new set up is taking the bees to the next generation for sure.
My personal choice tunes of the night was Pervis Lee - You don't care along with Bonnie Brisker -So much love deep inside of me.
Snobbish imitation of yesteryear.
"You lot should half the effort and twice the cool" said one man to our group of friends; this being our first visit to the BBSC. Turns out that man had a hand in running the event, so that confirmed our worries of the BBSC being an unwelcoming clique of old-school mods who yearn for the years of the Twisted Wheel Club.
Maybe it was because we weren't doing the correct dance moves but we obeyed the no drinks on the dance floor rule and gave enough space for those who wanted to do the more elaborate dancing. So who knows what we did to upset that surly bloke and make him go out of his way to knock us down a peg.
But, a round of applause to the DJ's who clearly know their stuff and the younger crowd who look the part and probably keep this night afloat. Go if you're a Northern Soul enthusiast (though you're probably already aware of this night anyway) but if you know nothing of the genre you'll feel out of place.
We wont be coming back but I think the BBSC only wants the die-hard fans and regulars to return and not those looking for an alternative night out.

Young Rebel Set
It was hot!!! No, not the band but the venue - you could've fried an egg (or a piece of soya for Vegans) on the floor!
That said - the band, in spite of nearly melting on the very 'compact' stage, provided a musically excellent set.
Heard of this band by chance several years ago and seen them a fair few times since - they rarely disappoint!
For those who still don't know about this band - find out - take a listen at their website:
http://www.youngrebelset.com/
The lead singer has in the past doen setts with Carl (Libertines etc) Barat so that a fair indication of the vocal and songwriting talent of the band.
See what you think but I enjoyed the chance (in spite of the heat) to watch a very good band in a very small and sociable venue (so close you could lean across and scrub Matts kipper with a damp facecloth!).
Enjoy all - Indie-folk-rock at it's best ... innit!
