free screening: la isla mínima on Thursday 28th June 2018
The place is the swampy, sultry southern region of Andalusia, and the time is 1980, when Spain is still in slippery transition between the death of Franco and the birth of democracy.
That split is reflected by the two Madrid cops — young liberal-leaning Pedro (Arévalo) and former fascist enforcer Juan (Gutiérrez) — who are sent to the hinterlands to investigate the disappearance of two teenage girls.
The cops are sent to Andalusia as a sanction. The disappearance of the two girls is not relevant for the people who live in the village, they are clinging to the past and women are underestimated.
*Film in Spanish with English subtitles.
