Overview
Sofia Gubaidulina’s Garden of Joy and Sorrow provides the centrepiece for this concert, with a particular focus on works featuring flute and harp, including a world premiere from our Composing For scheme 2021-22. Alongside this Luigi Dallapiccola’s “Piccola musica notturna” evokes the quiet solitude of night-time, taking its cue from Antonio Machado’s poem “Noche de Verrano”. Sadie Harrison is a composer who draws inspiration from across the globe and has a particular affinity with the peoples and culture of Afghanistan, having worked closely with the Afghanistan National Institute of Music: “…and it will pass…” veers between beauty and despair and references the folk music of Western Iraq and Northern Afghanistan, with a nod to the Star Spangled Banner.
