In Elgar’s Piano Quintet, Paul Janes, a regular pianist in Hallé concerts, is joined by a quartet of string players from the orchestra including Hallé Associate Leader, Sarah Ewins. The Quintet was composed while the Elgars were staying at Brinkwells Cottage in Sussex, which had wonderful views and where the composer delighted in long walks and building bonfires. This inspirational setting sparked the composer’s imagination: as the summer of 1918 turned to autumn Elgar began composing the Quintet, a work of lyrical beauty that’s infused with the melancholy of the turning of the seasons. Nature is at the heart of the Hallé’s Artist in Residence’sMoreni, her depiction of the moraines found in the Bulgarian mountains of Vitosha and Pirin
