Sarah Van Buren presents The Stone Tape on Friday 14th December 2018
Samarbeta are pleased to announce the 13th Samarbeta residency with New York based artist Sarah Van Buren. This event is the culminating performance showcasing what Sarah worked on during her residency.
Support from ZIM ZUM.
Sarah's residency will be split into two parts;
- First, a trip to the ancestral homelands of central Ireland, where SVB will visit the Gnod Farm (home to Paddy + Marlene of Gnod) to do some extensive digital and analog field recordings of the surrounding environs. Close attention will be paid to locations of energetic / supernatural significance.
- The second part will take place within the refrigeration unit at Caustic Coastal, and will see SVB working with and recontextualising the recordings as musical pieces, culminating in a final performance on Friday 14 December.
SVB has recently begun exploring a collage-style, site-specific and analog approach to making music, developed from recording and broadcasting projects throughout her life. She is interested in building song structures upon these aural relics, mining them for the deeper inherent sounds, that, taken out of context, can be reappropriated within ambient music and outsider / experimental pop songs.
The darker, ghostly aspect of the project is of particular note; esoteric ideas, the supernatural, contact with multi-dimensional beings and portals to other dimensions are a theme in SVB’s life since she began making recordings at age eight. Relatedly, she is inspired by the “stone tape theory,” which holds that an environment energetically absorbs and replays intense emotional or traumatic events which have transpired within it, essentially claiming that hauntings are, in a sense, a type of tape playback. Hence: could it be possible to make a sonic analog of paranormal experience?
Sarah Van Buren (SVB), most often located in upstate New York where she masterminds music + art festivals, throws deep dance parties and plays spooky pop music. She recently released her first solo tape, Disco Is Long Life, a dark + intimate EP full of hypnotic electronic pop abandon and obscured party atmospheres, suitable for both deep zoning and emotional swooning. Samarbeta is her first music residency, inviting her to return to her musical spiritland of Salford after many years of collaborative artistic work within the creative community of Islington Mill thru her now defunct video, performance + party collective, CHERYL.
Music Genres: Alternative, Electronic
