Pen:Chant Presents... Jess Green's Burning Books on Wednesday 14th October 2015
October's Pen:Chant Presents... features the searingly impassioned and relentlessly engaging poetic polemics of Jess Green's debut spoken word and music show Burning Books. Following two successful runs at the Edinburgh Fringe and numerous appearances at education conferences and rallies around the country the show is now touring the UK to public and critical acclaim.
Last year Jess's poem Dear Mr Gove stormed the internet, being featured on The Huffington Post and has so far racked up over 300,000 views on YouTube. Come and see for yourself why this rising star of the UK's spoken word scene has been attracting plaudits from all quarters - from the Guardian and Independent to Josie Long and Scroobius Pip!
The night will feature a special local guest, a short open mic section and the usual buffoonish whimsy from host Ben Mellor.
More about Burning Books:
Janine, a tired-out sixty-something fights for her pension on a picket line while Kev, the newly qualified graduate, angrily defends his right to support Movember. Meanwhile, Sandra the librarian surreptitiously removes ‘unsuitable’ books and takes them to the tip, secretly watched by her assistant.
At a time when public sector budgets are stretched to breaking point and teachers feel the finger of blame firmly on their heads, Jess Green tells the stories of these everyday underdogs with passionate and lyrical spoken word poetry - underscored by a rousing musical soundtrack from her band, The Mischief Thieves, on acoustic guitar and cajon.
Burning Books is a powerful, humorous and highly topical social commentary on the state of education and the teachers and students who survive within it.
“Brilliant. Her words have certainly struck a chord with teachers” – Huffington Post
“An internet sensation” – The Independent
“It’s brilliant. I loved it!” – Josie Long
