Funnel present : Proxyland | The Desert | Make Friends on Wednesday 5th December 2018
From Sao Paolo to London, Victor met Molly London born and of an Indian origin and ProxyLand was born. The foundation of the music was built upon conversations about city life and the dark undertow that pervades society today. ProxyLand's demos were created in Victors living room and have evolved into the dreamy yet stark noise confrontations you hear now. With the addition of Tom on bass and Will on drums, the band evolved into a full throttle four piece, allowing for the sound to develop and take a grittier turn.
Following on from last year’s Playing Dead EP, Bristol based The Desert return with the hypnotic new single Gone. The Desert started as a collaboration between lead singer & songwriter Gina Leonard and producer, guitarist Tom Fryer. The pair first worked together when Tom producer some of Gina’s solo work. The two soon hit upon a formula of Tom taking the songs that Gina had written with an acoustic guitar and adding layers of electronics and lush, detailed production.
Out of those early productions The Desert was born. They quickly came to the attention of the world with their hauntingly beautiful, debut single Just Get High in June of last year. Picking up plays on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music and Radio X, the single was followed by further tracks and later that year their Playing Dead EP.
Since then the band have been busy working on new material as well as performing their songs live for the first time. Most significantly for their live show, the line up has expanded, with Ryan Rogers (bass) and Jonny Parry (drums, electronics) joining the band. The addition of these new, full time members has allowed The Desert to truly emulate their songs in a live environment.
Make Friends are a dynamic four piece dispensing progressive indie-pop, laced with infectious grooves, big-crowd sing-along chorus' and ethereal washes of glacial guitar - it all driving forward their truly original big-stage festival sound.
They hail from Bristol where from their Avon-delta home studio they propel forward a sound with echoes of current acts such as Bombay Bicycle Club, Foals, Virginia Wing and harking back a little further, The Police, The Cure, Prefab Sprout.
Summer 2018 saw Make Friends head to Geoff Barrow's Invada Studios, Bristol where they recorded the long-awaited debut EP with acclaimed Everything Everything keys player and producer Pete Sen é .
In the shadow of Bristol's musical heritage they grappled with new arrangements, complex grooves, stretched chords - inverting what they knew to hone and mould their truly exciting new sound.
