TOTAL SCIENCE

Jason Greenhalgh (Q Project) and Paul Smith (Spinback) of Total Science have remained on the cusp of the electronic music counterculture from its inception to the present day.

Having first met in Oxford back in 1987, though Greenhalgh kicked off his career in 1991 with his single ‘Freestyle Fanatic’, it wasn’t until the release of Greenhalgh’s ‘Champion Sound’ on the Legend imprint that Greenhalgh and Smith began to establish themselves within the scene.

Under the name of Funky Technicians, the duo released ‘Got to Believe’, the first in a series of records that drew the label away from the slowing darkside movement towards the epic string sections and rolling beats being pioneered at the time. Greenhalgh and Smith continued releasing tracks on Legend for another three years until the end of 1997, which, along with help from Brillo of Timeless Recordings, saw the creation of their CIA label and the pair’s launch as Total Science.

They made themselves prominent through the release of their Silent Reign EP for Goldie’s Metalheadz and their 2000 remix of ‘Champion Sound’, their debut album Advance showcased the pair’s musical prowess with its exploration of down-tempo rhythms. Their innovative revival of old-school sounds and arrangements, together with Digital and Spirit, dominated drum & bass throughout 2001.

2010 saw the duo’s collaborative releases with S.P.Y ‘Gansta/Above The Clouds’ and ‘Legion/Ploc Monster’ released on Shogun Audio and Metalheadz respectively. The pair continued to collaborate with S.P.Y on later releases such as the Ghostrider EP on C.I.A.

With consistently impressive releases continuing to drop across Shogun Audio, Metalheadz,Critical and more, the duo eventually reignited their relationship with fellow innovators Digital and Spirit in 2016 for a series of releases that united Phantom Audio with C.I.A including massive tracks ‘Jigsaw’ and ‘Rumble’.

Recent successes include the pair’s 2016 Notes Of Blue EP on Metalheadz, their 2017 Turn Around EP on C.I.A and their collaborative releases with Break; ‘Big Time Winners’ and ‘Betamax’, both of which reached number one on Beatport’s digital sales charts. And unless you've been living under a rock you'll have heard their superb recent collab with Break, 'Dog's Dinner'.

Having performed unmissable sets globally (including festival appearances at Glastonbury, Sun & Bass, Outlook Festival, Hospitality On The Beach and Let It Roll), received major radio airplay and secured the attention of some of the UK’s most prominent DJs, Total Science have gone from strength to strength.

PHILTH

Peer Pressure Records frontman, Dispatch Recordings rising star, and Riya’s “favourite Ginger”, Philth presents the drum & bass he loves in his own unique way, his sets veering from future soul to pulsating tech-funk in the blink of an eye. Rugged yet beautiful, instinctively exploring the grey areas between sub-genres, his music has drawn support from across the scene. Philth combines widescreen imagery with precision engineering, he never loses sight of the dancefloor but retains the human touch with a sound that can touch your soul while rattling your ribcage with a bassline straight out of 1999.

'I want to create music that tells a story, music with strong emotional content. Even if the end result is a wall of bass, the track still needs to have some soul, music with the depth to stand the test of time.'

BLOCKS & ESCHER

Ever elusive and consistently shying to the shadows on the outskirts of the Drum & Bass scene, Blocks & Escher have carved a position where they are able to write and release their art, on their own terms.

Having gained early releases on Digital Soundboy and Renegade Hardware it was the launch of their own label, Narratives Music that established the duo as more than simply newcomers and into one of the most sought after underground names in electronic music.

After a string of high profile remixes for the likes of Zomby, Submotion Orchestra and of course Goldie; Blocks and Escher were asked to record their debut album for Metalheadz, to be released in 2018.

It was indeed Goldie who when asked to describe Blocks & Escher's music, stated 'this is art'.

SOCIAL MISFITS

Social Misfits have made quite an impact since arriving on the scene this year. Support from Annie Mac, DJ Target, Rene LaVice, Bryan Gee, Andy C and online support from the likes of UKF and many more have cemented their position as one of the hottest new Drum and Bass acts of 2018, and they're just getting started!

Their 2018 Social Misfits EP combines three tracks which did serious damage on more soulful dancefloors: 'Change the Game', 'Velvet Rooms', and 'I Feel It'.

Social Misfits is made up of Drum & Bass / Jungle veterans Blame (Moving Shadow, Good Looking Records) and DJ Concrete (Warning). The duo come to the label not only with a discography packed full of seminal D&B moments, but also years of understanding and experience in what makes a proper timeless dancefloor cut. Combine that with the backing of a label this year celebrating 25 years in the game in V Recordings, a label as relevant now as it was back when it all started, and that's been behind some the biggest and most longstanding names in this game... you know it’s time to sit up and take notice!

SWEETPEA

There aren’t many DJ’s that have put in the amount of time and effort as Sweetpea. Her love for underground music originally stemmed from listening to pioneering labels such as Ram, Shogun and Dispatch. Currently based London, she has built a concrete reputation in her 16 years in the scene for delivering exhilarating sets packed with energy that leaves the crowd begging for more.

Since moving to capital in 2010 and landing a slot on Origin UK Radio with Philth, she has leapt from strength to strength. Her passion for hosting shows landed her a weekly slot on the iconic Rude FM in 2011 which she held for 7 illustrious years, as well as guesting on Ministry of Sound with Metalheadz stalwart Bailey.

Famed for her live sets, Sweetpea has deservedly played at some of the biggest label and brand nights in Drum & Bass. Renegade Hardware, Symmetry, Flexout, Genesis, Soul in Motion and AKO Beatz are but a mere few that have had her grace the decks, supporting the biggest names in Drum & Bass at established venues across England and Europe including Fabric, Electric Brixton, Fire, Coronet, Volks and The Nest. She is also a holds residencies with Sine Series, Freenetik, Warm Ears & Launch.

Sweetpea has predominately focused more on DJ’ing over production, however she is no stranger to making music. Having played around on Logic for the past 6 years, only recently has she started taking matters seriously. Her debut release was a track with PRTCL on Terabyte Recordings in 2016 titled ‘Afterthought’ which marked the real potential this lady has as a producer. As her confidence and technique grows it has made her spend more and more time in the studio and is currently tying up solo tracks to be released on Medschool, Terabyte and a collab with Wreckless for Dispatch to be released this year.

A true Drum & Bass head, her hard work and passion for the music she holds dear makes this lady is a real inspiration to other women in the scene. With lots in the pipeline for the future, who knows where Sweetpea will be in the near future...

CONTRA b2b RSHMR

CONTRA's back catalogue includes releases on Liondub International Influenza Media, Inform Records, DNBB Recordings, Heavyweight Product, with support from DJ Hype, Ray Keith, Bladerunner, Liondub, and Joe Ford.

On RSHMR: 'There is no doubt that this 23 year old has huge passion for the genre he mixes – and knows how to get a crowd moving. Tight mixes of a high technical ability are composed of a vast selection of deep and minimal beats with current dancefloor bangers, which has secured supporting sets with of the biggest names in the scene including Shy FX, Goldie & Kasra.'

Expect FIRE when they combine for a very special b2b!

VISIONOBI

Visionobi is one of the scene’s brightest talents. Immersed in drum and bass from an early age, it is no surprise that this Rogue Jedi's expressive and dynamic approach has gained him the respect of many of his peers and enabled him to tour Europe extensively.

Since first picking up a microphone, he has hosted for the likes of Metalheadz, Hospital, Ram, Dispatch, Critical, Shogun, Spearhead, Symmetry, UKF, Drum&BassArena, Exit, Soul:ution, CIA, FabricLive, Soul:vent, as well as a plethora of festival brands and established promoters, whilst regularly hosting shows on the prestigious Rinse FM and internationally renowned D&BTV.

2015 saw his first official release on Dispatch Recordings, whilst 2016 has seen his vocals showcased on Metalheadz & Siren Audio. The future looks bright with releases on Metalheadz, Dispatch & Horizons imminent and Cyberfunk & Shogun potentially coming to fruition.

A man of many concepts, Visionobi’s most talked about project to date is his “Under The Influence” track and video. With the array of track names making up a 64-bar verse, Visionobi managed to create something personal but relevant to the whole scene, whilst highlighting his dexterity as a lyrics man.

Moving on from this, the conceptually obsessed MC started “Picturesque Music”. The idea of the “label” was to push vocal artists from the D&B & Hip Hop scenes to new realms within their creativity; challenging them to craft a piece of music from a simple image. So far all the music has been put out via youtube and facebook for free, but the future of Picturesque will be to move forward as an official label.

Since launching Picturesque, Visionobi has been itching to get back in to the promotional game. Partnering up with Andy from Sine, together they crafted the brand 'Rogue Elements'. Two forces collide, taking you on an intergalactic journey through the organic realms of Drum & Bass. Bound by a mutual respect and love for the culture, Rogue Elements promises to deliver a vibrant and unique evening of all things Drum & Bass. The launch night is on the 26th May 2017 at Brixton Jamm and promises to be something quite special.

Visionobi established himself during his time as a student in Southampton, quickly becoming the MC of choice for the most distinguished promoters within the city. He also promoted events such as Wax, Raygun Youth and Release, helping to establish a very credible scene on the South Coast for a number of years.

Born in London, Visionobi has since returned to the capital, where his intelligent and spirited approach to writing shows how he is one of the most unique MC’s in Drum & Bass. Incorporating Jungle, Hip Hop and Garage influences into his sets, expect high energy and honest lyrical content.

Since hosting for Wilkinson through 2013 & 2014 and winning ‘Best Newcomer MC’ at the 2013 Drum&BassArena Awards, Visionobi has established himself as one of the respected MC’s within the deeper realms of Drum & Bass. His versatility and hardworking ethic has seen demand for bookings increase as he continues to hone his technique.

BLACKEYE MC

Croydon based (bred) Blackeye MC has been crafting his hosting skills on the circuit from an early age, developing his skills with his local contingent, Lab Creation. Lab Creation held a venerated weekly radio show on the acclaimed London’s Original Life FM for around 4 years. While running their own parties, he found his first residency at a night called spectrum in Croydon. Here he met Andy Skopes, and worked with many others, using this as a base to develop his craft. As a result, Blackeye MC met Chris Inperspective and became a resident MC at the legendary Technicality night at the famous Herbal night club, establishing a major platform in his development.

From around 2006, still crafting his skills, Blackeye MC became a resident at the formidable Rupture nights after being recognised by Double O and Mantra. Bookings started coming in thick and fast, and he started to hold various residencies with nights such as Tech:nology, Fizzy Liquid, Launch, Function Records, AKO to name a few. These prime residencies unlocked opportunities to play at the legendary Hardware, Cylon recordings, Mute.ch, SunandBass and many other nights up and down the country hosting for a wealth of the scene’s pioneers.

Heavily influenced by hip hop, Pop, funk, soul, jazz and reggae and dub, Blackeye MC uses his knowledge of music to craft his art. Inclined to deliver his deep vocals, not on top of the music as a major focal point, but with a complimentary approach, Blackeye MC exudes presence enough to touch the music with his deep, soulful tones. This is a Master of Ceremony that works with the music, deftly complimenting rhythm and sound whilst being the go to person as the voice throughout the night.

DROP ART RESIDENTS

We may have a lineup of DnB heavyweights but Drop Art was formed around the DJ skills and musical passion of its residents. Expect top-quality liquid, rollers and jungle vibes (including their very own productions) from ALPHO, BENNY C, ROOT CAUSE, and TOM CARELESS as they get things rolling.
