Orphy Robinson x Marque Gilmore - Live in the Lounge on Saturday 21st September 2019
Sat Sep 21 - For the second part of Marque Gilmore's September residency, we are incredibly proud to present a true legend to the CLF Art Lounge.
Orphy Robinson MBE is one of the leading figures of the UK jazz scene - he has released records on Blue Note and played with Don Cherry, David Murray, Henry Threadgill, Courtney Pine, Jazz Warriors and Andy Shepherd.

Orphy is from London, UK—an acclaimed soloist who consistently works across a variety of eclectic musical forms (e.g. jazz, free jazz, free improvisation, jazz fusion, and funk music.
Orphy was a member of the acclaimed early 1980s Brit Funk band ‘Savanna’. He soon became an in demand session musician. In the mid 1980s he was a founder member of ground breaking Jazz big band “The Jazz Warriors” he also recorded and toured internationally with Courtney Pine on his sophomore album and tour.
He has also toured or appeared with many artists including Nigel Kennedy, David Murray, Don Cherry, John Tchicai, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, Hugh Masekela, Louis Moholo, Nana Vasconcelos, Andy Sheppard, Evan Parker, Butch Morris, Springheel Jack, Sunny Murray, Mica Paris, Joss Stone, Imagination, Savanna, Central Line, Junior Giscombe, Kenny Thomas, Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick, Kate Havnevik, Neneh Cherry Hugh Hopper, Robert Wyatt, Jazz Jamaica all Stars Orchestra and many others.
Robinson co produced the celebrated American Vocalist Carleen Anderson of latest solo album “Cage Street memorial: The Pilgrimage”. The album has been nominated for various Industry awards.
He also co-leads the ground breaking Avant Garde / Free jazz group “Black Top” with the 2014 Paul Hamyln Foundation winner Pianist Pat Thomas. They were selected to collaborate with the Barbican centres mammoth Jean Michel Basquiat Exhibition in 2017. The first large-scale exhibition in the UK of the work of American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960—1988) Culminating in a successful concert at the Lso St Lukes Church as part of the 2017 London Jazz Festival.
Most recently, Orphy has received critical acclaim for his tribute to Van Morrison's 'Astral Weeks' at The London Jazz Festival & Love Supreme festival. Astral Weeks is widely regarded as one of the most influential recordings of 20th-century contemporary music.
