The Lobster with live score by Solem Quartet on Thursday 5th December 2019
In a world-first, the Solem Quartet and Picturehouse Cinemas will be screening Yorgos Lanthimos' THE LOBSTER with live soundtrack from string quartet and piano. The almost exclusively classical, quirky soundtrack has been arranged for live performance and brings this cult film (from the director of THE FAVOURITE) to life in a totally new way.
Yorgos Lanthimos’s twisted black comedy envisions a dystopian society that cannot tolerate unattached adults. When a relationship breaks down, the rejected party must report to a country-hotel facility, where they have 45 days to find a suitable partner. Should they fail to do so, they will be transformed into an animal of their choice and released into the wild.
Cleverly skewering society’s elevation of the couple, Lanthimos’s debut English-language film segues from darkly comic satire to unconventional love story. Starring Rachel Weisz, Rachel Weisz and a Golden Globe nominated performance from Colin Farrell, THE LOBSTER also collected a 2016 BAFTA nomination for Best British Film. The film was also nominated for Best British Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (Ben Wishaw) and saw Olivia Colman win Best Supporting Actress at the BIFA awards that same year.
About Solem Quartet:
Formed in 2011, the Solem Quartet regularly perform at venues across the UK and internationally. Though primarily focusing on the core classical repertoire, the quartet are challenging a new generation of audiences with their series of events, Solem lates. By commissioning living composers, branching into diverse genres and performing live music in unexpected settings, the Solem Quartet are breathing new life into the chamber music world.
The Solem Quartet said: “In performing The Lobster with live score (part of our Solem Lates series) we invite people in to enjoy live classical music in a setting that harks back to the earliest days of cinema. The film utilises the string quartet repertoire we love - Beethoven, Shostakovich and Schnittke among others - and creates a fascinating musical world of eeriness, threat and unexpected tenderness sure to add a whole new dimension to what’s already an incredible film!”
