Refractions on Friday 30th August 2019

Since rave exploded into the public consciousness in the late ‘80s, UK dance music has been in a state of constant evolution – hardcore morphing into jungle, UK garage morphing into dubstep, sounds splintering and genres proliferating. This year, Red Bull celebrates the many permutations of the UK bass sound with a party taking over all three rooms of iconic London club Fabric.

Room One assembles a line-up of UK underground artists and labels that have had a global impact. R&S stalwart Blawan airs his slamming industrial techno, while a series of inspired pairings link artists across sounds and generations of UK dance music: Hessle Audio co-founder Pangaea goes b2b with techno shapeshifter Pariah, Saoirse shows off the eclectic contents of her record bag with 140BPM experimentalist Appleblim, and Timedance mainstay Bruce is joined by rising star Danielle.
In Room Two, the tempo is set to 160 BPM, as a range of artists explore jungle, drum ’n’ bass and other affiliated or parallel sounds. Houndstooth stalwart Special Request goes b2b with darkside jungle icon Source Direct. Adam F plays a special Colours set inspired by his breakthrough 1997 album of the same name. Sherelle and Addison Groove explore the links between jungle, d’n’b and Chicago footwork. Birmingham selector Jossy Mitsu goes b2b with Fauzia, while Impey kicks off proceedings with a set exploring the links between grime and club music.
Room Three is a celebration of that magic period where UK garage morphed into dubstep, with special focus on the pioneering producers who made the shift. El-B, Horsepower Productions and Dan DNR reach for the classics, dubstep pioneer Loefah goes b2b with L U C Y with Sgt Pokes on the mic, and rising producers A.G and Sicaria Sound play support.
