23 Skidoo on Friday 22nd February 2019

Even if you don’t think you’re familiar with the work of 23 Skidoo, you probably are. If you’ve heard The Chemical Brothers, you’ll know the bassline from their brilliant “Coup”, released in 1983. The British band’s extraordinary fusion of industrial, post-punk, funk, and world music first caught the world’s attention in 1980 with the release of “Ethics” and shortly afterwards the brilliant 'The Gospel Comes to New Guinea' and the “Last Words' 12' single. The band’s 1982 release “Seven Songs” was heralded by Paul Morley, then of the NME, as “one of the most exciting records I’ve heard since Unknown Pleasures.”

Simon Reynolds, in his seminal book on the post punk era “Rip it Up and Start Again”, described 23 Skidoo as having “conceived of funk as a sinister energy, an active metaphor for Control. Groove as trap and treadmill.”

Always concerned only with producing great work, rather commercial gain or meeting the expectation of others, 23 Skidoo continued producing both highly accessible as well as some very challenging and avant-garde material throughout the following three decades, collaborating with such diverse artists as Genesis P.Orridge and jazz legend Pharoah Sanders. In 1990 brothers and founder band members Johnny and Alex Turnbull founded Ronin Records and released music by a raft of British Hip-Hop artists and by Roots Manuva.

With such a diverse range of influences and eclectic back catalogue it has never been possible to predict what 23 Skidoo will do next. This is not a nostalgic “comeback” or “reunion” performance. Though not, by any stretch of the imagination, prolific in recent years, they have never disbanded. What we can be certain of is something rare, and extremely exciting.
