LAKUTA (LIVE) Level 1 http://lakuta.co.uk/
Lakuta are a musical collective founded by Cicely Taylor in Brighton. The British-based band have heritage from Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Malaysia, Spain and the UK.
Drawing on their backgrounds in jazz, funk, soul and world music to create a modern sound, the group is fronted by Kenyan-Tanzanian vocalist Siggi Mwasote and percussionist and vocalist Cicely Taylor. The name “Lakuta” is derived from Siggi's mother tongue and translates from Swahili to mean 'to find, meet, share or feel full'.
Before joining Lakuta, Siggi grew up singing in choirs and in a jazz trio. Whilst living in London she also had the opportunity to perform with the revered English National Opera, and make punchy dance music records. Cicely’s training in latin percussion and penchant for vintage funk and rare world music drove her musical passions, and when the two met they formed a choir together and it wasn’t long before Siggi was invited to join Lakuta.
Influenced by their travels in Africa and South America, they have generated their own unique lyrical style with a fresh beats-funk-soul twist which has attracted great support. This fusion of Benga, Soweto and Latin rhythms is driven by powerful female-led vocals which are passionately communicated through the music.
Lakuta’s highly danceable mix of Afrobeat, Funk and Latino grooves has led them to tour extensively, headlining stages at The Southbank Centre, Glastonbury Festival, Latitude Festival and many more.
This year Lakuta release their new album, ‘Brothers & Sisters’, which was made in collaboration with renowned producer Nick Faber, on the Tru Thoughts imprint. “Brothers and Sisters are what we are, musically and spiritually. This is our gift to the brothers and sisters with whom we share this planet” Sigge explains.
“This free-spirited performance bubbles with youthful exuberance, guaranteed to electrify any dance floor.” (AFROPOP Worldwide)
“(Lakuta are) first and foremost, world-class musicians. Their music has its basis in traditional afrobeat, but is infused with Latin rhythms, as well as western funk and soul. The fluidity and complexity of their songs depends on the mastery of all the many players in the group, and their ability to keep track of devilish rhythm changes, as well as staying on top of myriad breakdowns – which they all did faultlessly. All this on top of the stamina required to finish freeform, solo-filled songs, up to ten minutes long, make Lakuta one of the most musically impressive bands on Brighton’s scene.” (Brighton’s Finest)
