About

St Asaph Cathedral, the smallest ancient cathedral in Britain, stands upon the historic warpaths of Welsh princes. A special moment deserves a special setting – the magnificent architecture and stained-glass windows of St Asaph Cathedral provide the perfect setting for our full Orchestra to finally come together after their 75th anniversary celebrations were cut short in 2020.

Canadian conductor Kwamé Ryan directs the Orchestra in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. A tale spun in exotic music of the Persian Princess, Scheherazade, whose Sultan husband was so convinced by the infidelity of all women that he vowed to slay each of his wives after the first night. Scheherazade told 1001 bedtime stories, each with a cliff-hanger so tempting that her execution was postponed night after night and her life was spared.

The Orchestra’s 100 exceptional young musicians, age 13-22, are joined by the ‘Simply spectacular’ (The Independent) Jennifer Pike. Korngold was considered one of the founding fathers of the symphonic film score. His dazzling 1945 Violin Concerto sees a return to Korngold’s pre-Hollywood Viennese roots, while borrowing from the many film scores he’d composed over the previous decade.

At just 29, British composer and orchestrator Dani Howard is gaining international recognition with regular performances across Europe, the US and Asia. Argentum (Latin for silver) is a short, vibrant and fun, yet reflective piece centred around celebration, commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society and Classic FM in 2017.
