Boogaloo 3rd Birthday /w Ata Kak (Live) + Jamie Tiller + Esa on Friday 19th October 2018

We have curated a lineup to celebrate our 3rd birthday having done shows for 4 years now! We are very happy to say we have the following lineup of bands and DJs

Ata Kak (Live Band)

Jamie Tiller (Music From Memory)

Esa (Worldwide FM)

Mamadou and the Lekette (Live Band)

Giovanna (SisBis)

Jack Tilston (Boogaloo)

Ata Kak (Live Band - Liverpool Debut)

Ata Kak is the mysterious Ghanaian electronic/rap/highlife icon who kick-started the whole

Awesome Tapes From Africa phenomenon. After a long wait he has now started to play

his first ever live performances in Europe.

Ata Kak’s Obaa Sima cassette fell on deaf ears when it was first self-released in Ghana in

1994 but when American musicologist Brian Shimkovitz stumbled upon the tape at a street

stall in Cape Coast, Ghana eight years later it became the stimulus for him to launch his

Awesome Tapes from Africa blog, writing in his inaugural post: 'This is it. The song is

called Moma Yendodo. You may never hear anything like this elsewhere. No one I know in

Ghana listens to this frenetic leftfield rap madness.'

'Its positive shine, relentless energy, and alien earworm choruses feel like a portal to an

alternate reality, where the sounds of South Africa’s Shangaan electro, Mali’s Balani

Show, Syria’s dabke, British grime, and Portuguese kuduro all sweat together' – FACT

Jamie Tiller (Music From Memory)

One-time record dealer and former buyer for cult record store Redlight Records, Jamie has been digging since a young age, travelling extensively across European cities and backwaters alike on an endless quest for the most amazing music you’ve never heard. At the forefront of discovery, he can increasingly be heard championing these finds through DJ sets across Planet Earth.

Originally from London, Jamie recently relocated to Berlin via Amsterdam, where he set up Music From Memory along with fellow record connoisseur Tako Reyenga. Music From Memory is widely regarded as one of the most exciting labels to have emerged within the last five years. It has become synonymous with the release of visionary electronic music from the past as well as present. Together, Jamie and Tako also run Second Circle, a sister label specialising in genre bending dance music.

Casting a wide musical net, from African electronics to Japanese Wave, oddball House to outsider Pop, Jamie’s sets are constrained neither by genre nor tempo. Rather Jamie has a unique musical sensibility which allows him to seamlessly join the dots between musical sounds that few others could bring together; turning dance floors worldwide upside down and inside out.
Esa (Worldwide FM)
London based South African, Esa Williams is a musical polymath as a producer, DJ and Ata Kak band leader. He hosts a biweekly WorldwideFM show.

London based South African, Esa Williams is part of a unique breed of talent challenging the electronic music scene. Drawing influences from his roots but firmly looking towards the future, he embodies a sound without limitations. A charismatic and energy filled DJ as well as a gifted producer, his impressive and evolving output spans his early productions on his own Rememory Music label, to collaborations with Auntie Flo and the much-touted Highlife World Series. Take a trip through his back catalogue, one can find a distinct yet expansive musical identity of vibrant, rhythmic and wholeheartedly positive productions. His music is represented by acclaimed imprints such as Burek, Omena and Hello Sailor.

Esa carved out a niche curating electronic music-focused educational programmes in Cuba, East Africa and South Africa. Using his knowledge and skills he inspired a new generation of enthusiastic DJ’s and producers around the world. Esa takes pride in championing music from artists who may have fallen through the cracks. He can be regarded as a creative polymath being able to connect the dots on many cultural, historical, musical and technical levels

Now he’s found new ways to channel these experiences and stories through his music, performances and collaborative projects. Esa played a leading role in firing up the legacy of Ata Kak and bringing together the already legendary Ata Kak band. The formation is going for their third and fourth tour this year with Esa being busy on and off stage as their captain, conductor and producer.
