An Audience with Tracy Borman Presenting The Story of the Tower of London

Thursday 30 May 2019 at 7:30pm in The Venue, Bishop Grosseteste University

Following Tracy’s sell out talk on Elizabeth’s Women, we are delighted that she will return to BGU to deliver a talk on The Story of the Tower of London.

In this illustrated talk based upon her book of the same name, author, historian and joint Chief Curator of Historic Royal Palaces Dr Tracy Borman will explore some of the fascinating stories behind one of Britain’s most iconic buildings. The Tower of London was not just the backdrop, but the lead actor in some of the most momentous events of our history. Exploring the stories of its 950-year history reveals a dazzling cast of characters, from the well known (such as Anne Boleyn, Sir Walter Raleigh and the Princes in the Tower) to the more unexpected (spies, jewel thieves and polar bears).
Renowned as a fortress and place of execution, the Tower’s history is much richer and more complex than that. It has been home not just to prisoners and weapons, but also to royal beasts, public records and the nation’s coinage. The bewildering array of different operations and institutions that it played host to meant that the fortress has been a centre of constant, prolific activity throughout its long history.

When building work began on the Tower of London, the capital was little more than a small town, with about 10,000 inhabitants. Some 950 years later, the Tower still stands at the heart of a city of 8 million people, as a symbol of royal power, pomp and ceremony, tradition, heritage, military might, treachery and torture. Its myriad roles are reflected in the complex series of buildings that make up this formidable, magnificent fortress – an iconic site that still attracts millions of visitors from across the world each year.

Tickets are £8.00 each and can be purchased from https://ecommerce.bishopg.ac.uk/product-catalogue/events-and-alumni-department/events/an-audience-with-tracy-borman-presenting-the-story-of-the-tower-of-london
