Mike Garry & Toria Garbutt - Quiet Sirens in a Different Kitchen on Thursday 14th November 2019

Mike Garry

Mike Garry was a librarian for 15 years before becoming a poet.

He began by reading his own poems to the hundreds of young people who attended his Library Homework Centre. They loved what they heard and encouraged him to perform them at live poetry events and Slams, which he did, instantly winning fans and prizes throughout the UK.

His gritty poetry has won the admiration far and wide and his collaboration with Joe Duddell and New Order in New Yorks Carnegie Hall in 2014 received five star reviews.

Championed by Philip Glass for whom Mike is currently writing a libretto that will be premiered at the 2015 Days and Nights Festival in The Big Sur

Mike has worked in thousands of schools and his three books, Men’s Morning, Mancunian Meander and God is a Manc have become schemes of work in schools throughout the UK and his poetry is regularly heard on BBC Radio and TV.

He has read his poems in Prisons, Young Offenders units, Mental Health Hospitals, Children’s Homes, youth clubs and local pubs. He’s passionate about bringing live poetry to places it wouldn’t normally reach and to people who wouldn’t normally listen to it.

His performances are passionate swirling rhythms of thoughts and emotions converted to monologues of quick fire words.

In 2010, Mike was hand picked to tour with John Cooper Clarke by his management.

“I liked what he said and the way he said it” Said John reflecting on their five year working relationship performing in over 500 venues throughout the UK and Ireland.

Mike has recently been appointed Associate Fellow and Artist in Residence at the University of Westminster in London and is collaborating with number musicians to create new works.

Toria Garbutt:

Toria's words are silk javelins. Frank explorations of self, outpourings of a joyfully pained mind. She means it. Cos she's lived it.

Since bursting onto the scene in 2014,Toria has been a regular tour support for Dr John Cooper Clarke, most recently on his ‘Luckiest Guy alive tour' on which Toria performed her first European date.

In 2016 Toria released her Debut album 'Hot plastic Moon’ via spoken word label Nymphs and Thugs and in 2018 her first poetry collection ‘The Universe and Me' published by Wrecking ball press.

Toria’s words have also been featured in Not Too Tame’s Northern Souls show at the Edinburgh Fringe festival and recently in The Guardian for their feature on The Rise and Rise of the New Poets.

Toria has been involved in many projects including working with young people and prisoners, relaying the importance of having your voice heard no matter what your background and using poetry to turn pain into purpose.

Catch Toria on tour throughout 2019-2020 with Dr John Cooper Clarke among other appearances up and down the country at venues and festivals near you.
