A few great acts (John Hegley/Brian Bilston/Roger McGough) failed to conceal the huge dip in quality over the 2022 event. Terrible publicity before and during the festival - it was almost impossible to work out who was on and where and when - confirmed the feeling that too much of the weekend was thrown together at the last minute. For instance, the Roger McGough headliner on Saturday night was padded out with two 'friends' (one unlistenable and, I'm fairly sure, insulting to working-class Liverpudlians) at the start, and a genuinely appalling Q&A with Henry Normal after McGough's set (where were those questions you asked the audience to submit on Friday night, Henry?). Also, the 'saving up' of Carol Ann Duffy for Sunday night, when many people had gone home due to not much else happening during Sunday and/or because they had to go to work on Monday, was a clear example of stretching an already thin line-up beyond its natural length. It's also worth mentioning that the 'Free For Kids' venue was completely inappropriate for children. 2022 was great but this one was a big disappointment.

It was quite impressive how many people attended consistently over the weekend…afternoon and evening. Easy to be friendly. Range of performers with good acoustics on stage. The organisers were very enthusiastic and couldn’t have been more helpful. Chances to perform were available to all interested.Liked the idea of performance from different regional cities and the humour involved. Great idea to have Sunday lunch. Loved the closeness of the bar venue to the Winter Gardens and supporting such an impressive old theatre. So much appreciated the volunteer staff who put time in to make this so successful.

Winter Garden poets were amazing each evening and Johnny’s bar poets and speakers added the festival element - very well run by organisers and volunteers- did Morecambe proud 😍 can’t wait for next year.
