Spring Bank House Show venue information

Helen McCookerybook, one of the original She-Punks, pioneering musician and John Peel favourite, was originally bass player and lead singer with 70/80s punk band The Chefs and later Helen and the Horns www.mccookerybook.com

McCookerybook is currently touring the UK and will be appearing in Hull on Saturday 11th May 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. in an intimate house show in HU3 with Graham Graham Beck and DJ Doodlebug. Tickets are £8.97 through EventBrite and ticket holders will be emailed the address a few days before the event. HU5 pin up boy Graham Graham Beck (so good they named him twice) is supporting Helen and DJ Doodlebug will be playing crucial tunes throughout the evening and generally raising the cool factor.

McCookerybook was the only person to play twice in Hull City of Culture events (according to Hull promoter Andy Richardson) and having played in O’Rileys she was inspired by the boxing ring at its back to buy her daughters fur fabric boxing shorts for Christmas with their names embroidered on the elastic waistbands (which she hasn’t seen worn yet!).

In 2007 McCookerybook, (AKA Dr. Helen Reddington), published ‘The Lost Women of Rock’, a ground-breaking book recognized for its frank and critical analysis of women breaking into a male domain. The book was turned into a powerful documentary ‘Stories from the She Punks: music with a different agenda’ (2018, UK, 45 mins), directed by McCookerybook and Gina Birch of the Raincoats which had its successful world premiere at London’s 2018 Doc’n Roll Festival. It is currently touring the UK and had a sell-out screening in Belfast in January.

At the house show in May McCookerybook will be playing tracks from her latest album The Sea, by Helen McCookerybook, which has featured on BBC 6Music and Resonance fm and garnered acclaim - “Down to backing vocals which sound like an angelic cavalcade, The Sea’s true beauty and seriousness unravels” - Louder Than War and her latest single ‘Saturday Night with the London Set’, featuring her witty yet pensive lyrics and a characteristically counter-intuitive upbeat melody.

The wide appeal of McCookerybook distinct song writing and vocals, her evident wit and intelligence, prompts airplay on an eclectic mix of radio stations from 6Music, Juice FM’s ‘Midnight Campfire’ and interestingly BBC Radio Scotland’s nan Gaidheal, a Scottish Gaelic station that embraces her music. McCookerybook’s talent as a luminous chronicler of the heart will light up the intimate house show in May so don’t miss it!
