Chords Uk / Sha la la's /Dr Bird on Friday 30th July 2021
Chris Pope first composed his perceptive, razor sharp vignettes on the British way of life in the late ‘70s as the guitarist with Deptford Mod-Punk four-piece The Chords.
When their singer Billy Hassett quit in ’81, Pope formed Agent Orange, then moved to New York to peddle his craft with Gatecrash Heaven ( who bizarrely, were managed by Diana Ross’s husband) before returning home and reuniting with Chords’ drummer Buddy Ascott as Pope. This, their 10-track, Pat Collier-produced debut reveals their protagonist hasn’t mellowed a bit with age. His songs still bristle with frustration and vitriol ( Friends Like That) and cloaked in Who-like anthemic rock guitars and flamboyant Moon-like rolls ( Don’t You Ever let It Get You Down) they still provide a voice for those who never received all they truly deserved.
With Swirling Hammond Organ and Vocals delivered with real purpose, The Sha La La’s are a London based Four piece Steeped in Mod and Soul Roots. Signed to Detour Records their 60s R&B influences are apparent but make no mistake, their sound is definitely their own and definitely NOW. Founded by Darron Robinson (Vocals, Guitar) and John “Pax” Piccirillo (Drums) and with the line up completed by John Lee (Hammond Organ, Wurlitzer Piano) and Vere Osborne (Bass) they released their debut album, Feelin’ Real on Detour Records in 2013, With the blisteringly anthemic Soul Of The Nation 7” single released the following year and the Your Blind Soul EP in 2015. The summer of 2017 finds them as inspired and as Soulful as ever with the latest LP, (Gotta Find) A Better Way set to become another modern classic . The Sha la la’s…… somewhere between Detroit and Canvey Island…
Dr Bird started as a solo acoustic project for Bobby Tarlton to get out there and sing his own songs to anyone who would listen. Dr Bird, as a band, came together in April 2015, and have already built up a good following by playing at such venues as The Pack & Carriage in Euston, The Ealing Blues Club, The Fiddler's Elbow in Kentish Town and The Stow Fest.
As of today, Dr Bird is a four-piece combo, playing Bobby's Mod-inspired, soul-infused, new wave post punk Britpop songs, along with a selection of the songs that inspired them.
Their first single is now in the pipeline and their gig diary is filling up.
