We can only date this very old tradition to the beginning of the 1800s, we will never know when it began, many people have there own theories, but I believe it has something to do with barrels, the face has been purposely cleared to form the open flatness, its called coopers hill, barrel makers were called coopers, and go back hundreds of years, anyway it has changed from all those years ago, there is no longer shin kicking or grinning, dancing round the maypole, and other events, it was put on by the gentry, for we assume the workers, local peasants, now its ran by the peasants for the peasants, we are proud villagers of Brockworth of our tradition, before it became well know nationally and globally, it was put on for the villagers of Brockworth, now its become famous we welcome anyone and everyone to celebrate our great tradition of cheese rolling, the event is free, and everyone attends at there own risk
