Joe Armon-Jones on Tuesday 8th October 2019
Joe Armon-Jones combines free-flowing, dynamic energy with a bigger vision. A prodigious, head-turning keys player, debut album Starting Today is a showcase for his ludicrous chops on the piano, and the like-minded, equally talented bandmates who join him on the record. It comes after years of building connections and finding a vision for the music he wants to make.
A founding member of the Ezra Collective, he has performed with a wide range of artists from Pharoahe Monch to ATA KAK, and is a regular fixture in the bands of Nubya Garcia & Mr Jukes.
Following 2017’s “Idiom”, a duo project with producer Maxwell Owin, and contributing to Brownswood’s' We Out Here' project, Joe released his debut album “Starting Today” in May 2018.
The album features includes fixtures from London’s vital jazz community; Nubya Garcia, Oscar Jerome and leader of The Afrikan Revolution, Asheber. On 'Starting Today', Joe “takes a modern-jazz journey from the discrete influences on that eclectic London sound to its thrillingly diverse present - and stakes his claim as one of the scene’s most promising voices,” (Pitchfork). Slipping in elements of house, 2-step, reggae and broken beat into his jazzy style, the album “distinguishes the pianist and composer as a soulful, modern producer” (Redbull).
