Playtime with Tom Gibbs on Thursday 18th January 2018

Pianist Tom Gibbs was one of Jazzwise magazine’s ‘One to Watch in 2011′ and went on to receive further acclaim for his 2011 release, Forgotten Things. The album, which featured New Yorkers Ari Hoenig and Gilad Hekselman alongside Gibbs’ co-leader, bassist Euan Burton, was one of BBC Scotland’s records of the year and was nominated in two categories (best band, best album) at the 2011 Scottish Jazz Awards.

Gibbs was first drawn to jazz by his father and grandfather, both keen amateur musicians, and his cornet-playing grandfather, who gave him the first CD he owned, a Horace Silver compilation. Later, a trip to Smalls Paradise in New York pushed him further in a jazz direction.

He gained a Masters with distinction at York University, a forward-thinking department where we was mentored by John Taylor and Julian Arguelles, both key influences. He also studied in New York with Jason Moran and Oslo with Ralph Alessi. Based in Glasgow since 2007, Gibbs has worked with Swedish guitarist Ulf Wakenius, among many other players, and has recorded for bands including Admiral Fallow, Hue and Cry and The DT6.
