Tommy Smith solo saxophone on Saturday 11th November 2017
Saxophonist Tommy Smith has been a presence on the global jazz scene since his teenage years with Gary Burton’s Whiz Kids quintet and celebrates his fiftieth birthday year with this special solo concert in his home town.
Now widely regarded as one of the pre-eminent saxophonists in jazz, Smith has recorded for two of the great jazz labels, Blue Note and ECM Records and currently tours the world with Norwegian bass master Arild Andersen’s trio, widely regarded as one of the premier groups working in jazz today, and his own Tommy Smith Quartet: Embodying the Light, a tribute to his greatest hero, jazz icon John Coltrane.
He played his first solo concert this summer at Rochester Jazz Festival in New York. It proved to be one of the highlights of the festival and he's now looking forward to playing another totally acoustic set in a church just a few miles from where he grew up.
The programme is likely to include jazz pieces by musicians including Michael Brecker, melodies by Robert Burns and Duke Ellington and original tunes.
Tea and coffee will be served in the church hall after the concert.
