Self-guided days are unique as you can discover Durham Castle for yourself without going on a guided tour. Our knowledgeable guides and volunteers will be throughout Durham Castle to answer your questions and share some of the stories and hidden history of the Castle.
Experience history and tales from 1000 years of living history. Built in the Norman period as an imposing fortress, Durham Castle’s story is entwined with that of the Prince-Bishops of Durham, whose semi-regal status made them some of the most powerful and wealthy men in the country. Discover a castle that gradually turned into a lavish palace, which was affected by major historical events from the Reformation to the English Civil War. It was transformed in the Victorian period into a place of learning, as the home of University College, the founding college of Durham University.
Durham Castle self-guided days offer a relaxed expereince, whether it's exploring the castle, watching the world go by in the grassy courtyard or enjoying refreshements in the Castle Cafe.
Please note, there will be no guided tours in operation during these days but there will be talks throughout the day.
Tickets can be brought at Palace Green Library and the World Heritage Site Visitors Centre. No need to book and normal charge apply.
The historic nature and layout of the Castle means that the majority of the building is inaccessible to wheelchair users and pushchairs. The castle has many steps and staircases, some of which are uneven.
