Guitar Journey: Guillermo Hill & Jonny Phillips

Two of the leading acoustic players in Europe take you on a musical journey following the development of the guitar from its origins in Spain and North Africa along a path across Europe, Africa and the Americas.

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Guillermo Hill began playing guitar at the age of eight and went on to play with musicians including Osvaldo Fattoruso, of the legendary Uruguayan jazz group Opa. Since moving to London in 1997, he has played and recorded with singers including Mica Paris, Monica Vasconcelos, Tom Jones and Jennifer Lopez and musicians including Brazilian drum master Airto Moreira, pianist Zoe Rahman and bassist Davide Mantovani.

Jonny Phillips is best known for leading the Latin American-influenced band Oriole, which is one of the most accomplished groups on the UK jazz and world music scenes and has released three critically acclaimed albums. He has also performed with musicians including Arun Ghosh, Polar Bear, Julia Biel, Roland Gift, and Shabaka Hutchings.

Together Hill and Phillips play melodic, warmly engaging guitar music that includes jazz and bossa nova standards as well as original compositions with Spanish and Latin American influences.

Music Genres:

Jazz, World Music
