Dewiniath by Megan Broadmeadow [Dreamy Place Festival 2024]
Venture into the Bandstand and seek out the hologram beings that hover there. Talk with them, listen to their songs, but dear traveller be wary… Some kind of sorcery is afoot.
Dewiniath (meaning ‘Sorcery’ in Welsh) draws on ancient and cutting edge magic and involves both human, and non-human collaborators. Drawing on a rich seam of folklore and the documented history of witchcraft in the artist’s native Wales, the work uses cutting edge technology & AI. Parts were made with a group of people especially interested in ancient magic. Philosophers write on the ‘magic’ of technology, and the potential of human / tech hybrids walking the earth. Megan asks what happens when the old meets the new? What magic will we rely on in the future, and who will be practicing it?
Originally encountered deep in a pine wood at Green Man festival in Wales, Dewiniaith travels to England for the first time this October for Dreamy Place.
Megan Broadmeadow has a multi-disciplinary practice which explores both the alternative realities present within herself, and those imagined or described across popular culture, scientific research, science fiction and religion. Her work has been exhibited and performed across the UK and internationally.
Dewiniaith was originally commissioned for Green Man 2024. Supported by Green Man Trust, Arts Council Wales and Colwinston Charitable Trust.
