About

A Falklands 40th commemorative event will take place in the City of Carlisle over the weekend of the 13th-14th of May 2022 we are hoping to make this as high a profile event as possible, invited guests include a government minister, the Falkland Islands representative to the United Kingdom, the Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, the Mayor of Carlisle, local members of Parliament. The event is being covered by local and national TV and radio networks.

The format of the event is as follows,

Friday 13th May 2022

An informal get together in the Ex-Servicemen’s club Carlisle, hosted by Rachel Simons a Falkland Island resident during the conflict and the lady who started the scarves for veterans’ group.

The Ex-Servicemen’s Club is situated at,

1 Albert Street Carlisle CA1 1HZ, 5-minute walk from the city centre. Dress for the evening is informal, timings are, 7pm until late.

Saturday 14th May 2022

1300hrs A Military Parade for all Ex-Falkland Island veterans will take place in the centre of Carlisle starting at 1pm, all veterans/standard bearers that wish to march in the parade are asked to assemble in the grounds of Carlisle Cathedral at 12.30 pm. Dress for the parade is, parade dress, medals and head dress as appropriate, Falkland scarves. The parade will be led by Pipe major Steven Duffy ex Scott’s Guards.

1400hrs A service of remembrance will take place in St Cuthbert’s Church which is situated next to Carlisle Cathedral, the service will be led by Padre David Cooper, Padre to the 2ndBattalion the Parachute Regiment during the Falklands Campaign.

1500hrs A reception will take place in the Tithe barn Carlisle which is situated next to St Cuthbert’s Church.

1900hrs for 1930hrs A formal dinner for Falklands veterans will take place in the ballroom of the station hotel Carlisle, the hotel is situated outside of Carlisle railway station once again 5 minutes’ walk from the city centre. The Dinner is open to all veterans/Partners and family. The dress for the dinner is Black tie/lounge suit, evening/cocktail dress with miniatures.

Tickets for the dinner will be limited to 180 people, the cost of tickets will be approximately £50 pp but we are trying to reduce this cost for veterans and their guests.

The dinner will consist of:

A drinks reception on arrival

A four-course dinner

Wine and Port.

All dietary requirements will be catered for

A seating plan will also be arranged to allow you sit with friends where possible.

Steven Duffy
We're delighted that Steven and his bagpipes will be our guest speaker at this very special event.

Steven Duffy was taught to play bagpipes from the age of 10 years. Aged 16 he joined Her Majesty’s Scots Guards where at the Guards Depot Piping School he was instructed by Pipe Majors’ Angus MacDonald and Dixie Ingram.

Steven is a Falklands veteran. Posted to the 2nd Battalion Pipes & Drums in 1982, while serving with the reconnaissance Platoon he was critically wounded at the Battle for Tumbledown Mountain, the last battle of the Falkland Island conflict. Subsequently Mentioned-in-Dispatches for distinguished service, he returned to duty, attending the Army School of Piping, Edinburgh Castle where he achieved the Army Pipe Majors Certificate (bandmaster) in 1984 and taking a piobreiachd prize at the London Piping Society contest.

He was a member of the 2nd Battalion Pipes & Drums that won the Grade II European Pipe Band Championships, took 2nd place World Pipe Band Champions securing a return to Grade I competition in 1986. During his extensive career Steven has played at many of the most prestigious State and military occasions including the Queens Birthday Parade, Beating Retreat Horse Guards Parade, State Banquets, Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Royal Tournament.
