Under the baton of the dynamic Emilia Hoving, audiences will experience a powerful programme featuring works by Cecilia Damström, Ninfea Cruttwell-Reade, and Grace Williams—each piece a testament to originality, depth, and emotional resonance.
Cecilia Damström’s ICE delivers a striking musical narrative on global warming and the collapse of historic ecosystems. Through its urgent and evocative soundscape, the composition paints a world on the brink, offering glimpses of both struggle and hope—urging us to imagine a way to rewind the damage.
The evening also marks an exciting milestone with the world premiere of Ninfea Cruttwell-Reade’s Piano Concerto, performed by BBC NOW regular Clare Hammond. Known for her expressive virtuosity, Hammond brings this fresh and compelling work to life, ensuring a moment of discovery for audiences.
Finally, the programme turns to the series’ namesake, Grace Williams, a pioneering force in Welsh classical music. Her First Symphony, believed to be the first symphony ever written by a Welsh composer, carries the fire and defiance of its inspiration—15th-century Welsh rebel Owain Glyndŵr. Dramatic and commanding, this early masterpiece showcases Williams’ gift for bold orchestration and storytelling.
