The West of England MS Therapy Centre was set up in 1985 to provide oxygen therapy for people with MS.
Multiple Sclerosis is a neurological condition which affects the Central Nervous System. People are normally diagnosed in their 20s and 40s – often with young families. The disease can cause sudden blindness, deafness, loss of mobility, loss of balance, cognitive problems, extreme pain and fatigue – as well as many other symptoms.
There is no set pattern to the condition, and some people will never suffer from blindness while others will lose their sight very rapidly.
The therapies the MS Centre provide are physiotherapy, which helps to maintain and improve mobility, prevent muscle spasms, improve muscle tone, maintain general fitness and normal patterns of movement and provide general advice. We also run a social exercise class which helps with to do this as well, but in a fun and social way.
We provide oxygen therapy, where our Members breath pure oxygen while under pressure. This helps with fatigue, visual disturbance, bladder control, balance, sensory perception, cognitive problems, pain and also increases general well-being.
Counselling – We provide counselling for our members and their families to help them come to terms with the diagnosis and face the challenges that lay ahead.
We also provide a range of complementary therapies including acupuncture, aromatherapy, reflexology and reiki which help to reduce fatigue, stress and muscle spasms, improve circulation and alleviate stiffness and aches and pains.
We also have a spasticity clinic, MS nurse and beautician who regularly come into the Centre to see our members.
Our members also get the chance to meet other people with MS and socialise with them.
The MS Therapy Centre has recently opened its doors in Bradley Stoke. Since opening in February, we have had over 50 new members come to the Centre for therapies and treatments. Our members come from North Somerset, Somerset, Bristol, Monmouthshire, South Gloucestershire and B&NES.
It will cost around £400,000 to run the Centre in 2017. That works out at £8,000 a week.
