Roots of Rumba (ROR) began in 2013 at Richmix as a mission to provide a platform for established and emerging artists to present Dance Theatre with Afro-Latin dance and themes at the heart.
Latin shows are often very 'front facing' with impressive movements and big smiles, but there is a huge potential for creating deeper work, (like Ella’s most recent piece of work Ladylike, which uses Afro Cuban dance to talk about issues around sex, sexuality and the #metoo movement).
Growing up, Ella often felt her dance forms didn’t get the same respect and opportunity to shine as contemporary and ballet. In response to this she decided to create a festival that allows Afro-Latin theatre a spotlight on the stage. This year Roots of Rumba will present 3 amazing artists from across the UK, One international act and two local artists from each city, of different generations, genres and each presenting very different work that has truly showcases the potential and scope of Afro-Latin Dance Theatre! Line up TBA, but prepare to be amazed!
What is Afro-Latin Dance Theatre?
We believe that Afro-Latin Dance Theatre includes: Rumba, Tango, Afro-Cuban; Afro-Brasilian; Samba, Salsa; Capoeira; Baile Funk; Kuduru; Bachata; Hip Hop (many forms were created by the Latin community in the USA), Caribbean dances - including Haitian dance, Dance hall and African dances such as Sabar, Kizomba (as all Afro-Latin dance forms can be traced back to Africa in their roots).
