Princess Ida on Wednesday 3rd - Saturday 6th April 2019

Once upon a time there was a princess called Ida, who had been betrothed in infancy to Prince Hilarion of the neighbouring kingdom. But Ida did not want to marry the prince. Instead, she renounced mankind and founded a women’s university, where she wielded axes, ate cold roast lamb, and taught the theory of evolution with dubious accuracy...

Bristol Gilbert and Sullivan Operatic Society proudly presents Princess Ida, a hilarious twist on a traditional medieval fairy tale. Join Hilarion as he attempts to infiltrate Castle Adamant and woo his promised bride, enlisting the help of his friends Cyril and Florian. Inevitably, the three are forced to dress as women and hilarity ensues—but some things are not so certain. Can Ida, with dignity, her post resign? Or will Prince Hilarion’s hopes be sadly blighted? And most importantly: what is the thing that’s known as ‘Man’?

Wednesday 3 April: Gala Night - optional pre-show talk with our director and musical director, and post-show drink with the cast!

Saturday 6 April: Costume Competition - join us on stage after the matinee performance where you and your children can show off your best princess, prince and soldier costumes and have photos with the cast!
