Western (12A) on Tuesday 16th October 2018
A celebration of the classic film genre, taking the themes and iconography and applying them to present day migrant workers caught in a battle of wits on foreign soil.
A small task force of German workers are sent to a scenic but remote region in Bulgaria to construct a hydroelectric plant. However, they are confronted with their own prejudices and mistrust due to the language barrier and cultural differences with native villagers. Tensions come to a head between worker Meinhard and the project foreman, as the conversations and confrontations echo themes affiliated with the Western genre.
Western is a soulful slow-burn with characters you can sympathise with and a mood-driven script, resulting in an authentic cinematic experience whilst also being a razor-sharp homage to a mostly bygone Hollywood genre.
“A work of unmatched subtlety, complexity and artistry…”
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
