The Rider (12A) on Monday 15th October 2018
From director Chloé Zhao (Songs My Brother Taught Me) comes this docu-drama portrait of the American heartland, which won the Art Cinema Award at Cannes 2017.
After suffering a near fatal head injury, young rodeo cowboy Brady is told he must give up the sport. But Brady needs to support his family, and the rodeo is his passion as well as his lifeline. Without it he must seek out a new identity, exploring what it means to be a man in the heartland.
This hyper-realist film is enhanced by using cast members who were involved in the real-life story that the film is based upon, including lead actor Brady Jandreau, his sister and father, and fellow injured rider Lane Scott. Set against the expansive landscapes of the Dakotas, director Zhao studies modes of contemporary masculinity without glorification or judgement.
“A beautiful, longing look at the transforming American West”
