TOM's Film Club: Parasite - Black & White Version (15) on Monday 10th August 2020

Please note, this event has been cancelled.

Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes and historically the first foreign-language film ever to win the Best Picture Oscar at the Academy Awards, South Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho’s superb blackly comic satirical masterpiece Parasite returns, but this time as the latest to undergo a modern monochrome makeover à la George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road - Black and Chrome and James Mangold’s Logan Noir.

A downtrodden family eke out a hand-to-mouth existence in a basement apartment. Struggling to earn enough for basic survival, their luck changes when the son, Ki-woo (Choi Woo-Shik) is employed to teach English to the daughter of the wealthy Park family in their suburban home. Slowly, daughter, father and mother (Park So-dam, Song Kang-ho and Jang Hye-jin, respectively) bluff their way into roles for the wealthy Seoul household and cunningly infiltrate every aspect of the Parks’ daily life. But when an interloper threatens their newfound comfort, things quickly spiral out of control.

Full of energy, verve and a transgressive visual wit, Parasite is incredibly watchable but also brims with rage at the inequalities of contemporary capitalism, with a real focus on the desperation, misery and immorality of poverty. A masterful creation, brilliantly designed, shot and performed, and now presented here in this new colour palette, the film becomes more intimate, with emotions colder and faces sterner – it provides an illuminating counterpoint to a film that has taken audiences by storm, while also fulfilling a long-held dream of Director Bong’s to make a Black & White movie inspired in the style of one of his favourite films, FW Murnau’s Nosferatu.

“At the risk of adding to the hype, Parasite really is the kind of remarkable experience that makes modern movie-going such a joy. I saw it for the fourth time last week and I’m now desperate to view the black-and-white version that Bong recently unveiled at the Rotterdam film festival” - Mark Kermode, Guardian
