TOM's Film Club: Long Day's Journey Into Night - 2D (12A) on Tuesday 11th August 2020
Please note, this event has been cancelled.
Luo Hongwu (Huang Jue) is a former casino manager who returns to his hometown after being away for a long time for the funeral of his father. Upon finding an old photo in a broken electronic clock (one of many of the film’s signifiers on the themes of memory and time), he begins to search obsessively for Wan Qiwen (Tang Wei), a woman he once loved, who disappeared mysteriously and whom he has never been able to forget, as seen through frequent flashbacks of her in a green dress. Fearing her disappearance might be connected with her attachment to a gangster who also murdered Lou’s friend many years previously (known only in the film as “Wildcat”), Luo’s return and subsequent search for Wan leads him on a path that interweaves both past and present, as well as dream and reality.
Told in two parts: the first an achronological mosaic of a detective story, the second a nocturnal dream comprised impressively in a hallucinatory hour-long shot which seems to span a longer field of memory and time (plus table tennis, pool and karaoke!). Long Day’s Journey Into Night is a technical tour-de-force that demands to be seen on a big screen and will restore your faith in the power and mystery of cinema.
“It's a vanishingly rare occurrence to see something on screen and be unable to wrap your head around how it was achieved. But in Long Day's Journey Into Night... some kind of sorcery is at work” - Wendy Ide, Guardian
